Summary: The present report describes the research activities conducted by the European scientific community from 1996 to 2000 mainly within the EC fourth framework programme and EU national programmes, including the third European strastospheric experiment on ozone (THESEO). The intent is not to provide an overall assessment of the present state of the stratospheric ozone layer, but rather to emphasise the main contributions and outcomes of the European-coordinated stratospheric research programme. The structure of this report is 'issue oriented' to give the reader a thorough overview of the main scientific advances with reference to the global stratospheric ozone problem. These issues are addressed in the following chapters: Long-term changes in the stratosphere, Polar ozone, Mid-latitude and tropical ozone, The stratosphere and climate change, Atmospheric UV radiation, Aviation impact. At the beginning of each chapter, 'bullet points' highlight the main scientific results described. Further emphasis is given to the contribution of European research to the advancement of knowledge and to a better understanding of these issues, with the scope of disseminating the results of the stratospheric research programme to a broader audience. By highlighting the major achievements from the European and national programmes, the scientific community will allow programme managers and decision-makers to better evaluate the outcome of the scientifc activities which have been conducted during the period 1996-2000 at the European level. Finally, the report identifies key research areas for future research activities in Europe and contributes to formulating improved environmental policy on these issues.
