Summary: Our report consists of four parts. It begins with a history of the acidification question from the scientific and political aspects. This is followed by a digest of what we have learned about the problems of acidification up to the time of writing. The descriptions are rooted in Swedish conditions but they also take note of the international picture. In the third part of the report we discuss alternative lines along which the problems of acidification may develop over the next few decades. We deal with a number of questions that we consider to be of central significance. This forward-looking part of the report is of necessity speculative in character. We conclude in the fourth part of the report by summing up our assessments and conclusions.
